Fragrance Frustrations? Avoid Smells that Attract Mosquitoes

We all have that one friend or family member that gets swarmed by mosquitoes at every gathering. Maybe it’s you! The fact is, mosquitoes do prefer some scents over others, and many of these scents are not things that we can control. However, unlike our blood type or the amount of carbon dioxide that we exhale, we do have the power to alter some mosquito-attracting scents and banish a few of our fragrance frustrations.Mosquito on a person's hand

Scents that Attract Mosquitoes

Certain scents of personal care items can make you a target for hungry mosquitoes. Perfumes and colognes with floral notes are especially attractive, so if you have plans to attend a cookout or another event outside, it might be best to leave those scents at home.

Additionally, scents found in skin care products can be enticing to mosquitoes. Lotions and creams intended to smooth skin often contain lactic acid, which is something that humans emit naturally when exercising or eating certain foods. People with a greater buildup of lactic acid usually attract more mosquitoes, so adding even more lactic acid to the mix is probably not the best idea for thwarting these pests.

Line of Defense

If you know that you are going to be outside, there are some preventative measures that you can take to defend against mosquitos. The first is to use unscented personal care products, or at least ones that do not contain floral scents; consider your shampoo, soaps, and lotions.

If you do not want to change up that routine, you can add to it instead. Just as mosquitoes are attracted to some scents, they avoid others. Mosquitoes usually stay away from citronella, peppermint, eucalyptus, garlic, and lavender. You may also purchase products designed to repel mosquitoes, such as those that contain DEET, Picaridin, and oil of lemon eucalyptus.

Long-Term Mosquito Protection

If you are looking for a longer-term solution, mosquito barrier treatments and mosquito misting systems are viable options. Barrier treatments are applied to your yard every 2-4 weeks during mosquito and gnat season, and mosquito misting systems are installed in the area for continuous protection. Our trained mosquito exterminators will customize each of these options to your needs. Contact us today to learn more about our mosquito control services or schedule your free inspection today!
